In hopes of building our rendition of the perfect Old Body Style Ford we’ve already made significant improvements in this old truck with the most notable being the installation of an intercooler system from Banks Power and the new front suspension swap to a Reverse Shackle kit with Super Duty leaf springs from Sky’s Offroad. Of course, we’ve dialed up the horsepower a bit with a Banks 4” exhaust, S&B cold air intake and custom tuning from AA Design & Tuning. As it sits, the old girl made a little over 300hp to the tires and does a pretty decent job of towing our fifth wheel around the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The new front suspension made this quite possibly the best riding leaf spring truck we’ve ever been in, but 23 years and a couple hundred thousand miles has not been kind to the steering system. With some noticeable play in the wheel and a significant ‘wander’ at freeway speeds, this F350 isn’t quite the ultimate daily driver just yet. While the steering system under these old was a pretty ‘tried and true’ setup, like anything, overtime things wear out. Creeping up on 230,000 miles there was some play and wander in the front end while driving and with an unknown amount of mileage on the steering linkage and tie rods, replacing them with an upgraded setup like this combo from Carrick Customs was a no brainer. Steering Gear At 230k and what appears to be the original steering gear, it’s understandable that there’d be some slop in the steering wheel. While the factory box does offer some adjustment that could take up some of that play, with its age and mileage, replacing with something new just seemed logical. Redhead Steering Gear of Auburn, WA has been remanufacturing steering gears since 1981 and has learned a thing or two after an estimated 61,000+ rebuilds. Using a much stronger and longer lasting Synergy Mfg. heavy duty metal on metal tie rod ends and on the tie rod end of the drag link, you can expect a much sturdier feel from the wheel, along with extended lifespan, especially if you’re running a big heavy set of tires and wheels. The low misalignment dust boots also help with rod end roll to eliminate that dead spot feeling in the wheel. Since most of the original steering gear housings used by Ford didn’t use a bushing or bearing, Redhead increases longevity and improves steering feel by machining a new bore and installing needle bearings. Sector shafts are also checked on a lathe to be sure they’re straight and true and all sealing surfaces are fully polished to eliminate leakage issues. Going through the entire rebuild process with all new seals of course, but they also take things one step further by custom fitting each worm and piston assembly with new precision fit steel balls. As the only steering gear to offer this kind of attention to detail, they can ensure that the most exacting tolerances are assembled into the gear box and eliminate every bit of play you may feel from an OEM replacement and standard re-manufactured box from your local parts house.Subscribe Our Weekly Newsletter On the pitman arm side of the draglink, Carrick uses this heavy duty 1-ton GM style rod end. Not only is it much stronger than a factory end link, it’s less expensive too. You’ll notice the slick machined taper sleeve installed here on the rod end. Your pitman arm will need to be drilled or machined out to 1” to accept the sleeve, which will also need Tig welded into the pitman arm to accept the new GM style end link. Steering Linkage With the worn out steering gear taken care of it was time to investigate the steering linkage where some diagnostics did show some play in the tie rod ends and drag link. We also needed to address an issue with the pitman arm that wasn’t taken care of when the front suspension was overhauled. We purchased this truck from the original owner who had at some point installed an old school leveling kit, that required a drop pitman arm. When we converted to the reverse shackle and Super Duty springs, this brought the stance back down near factory ride height and the drop pitman threw off some of the geometry in the steering and created some bump steer issues. Our tie rod ends were showing some signs of wear with a minor amount of play on both sides. The dust boots were also a little worn out, and with who knows how many miles on these parts, replacing and upgrading will be money well spent and make the truck a little nicer to drive. One of the main reasons for all this work was to get a stock style pitman installed to correct some of the steering angles that were thrown off when we removed the old school leveling kit last month. When we installed our new Reverse Shackle Kit and Super Duty leaf springs, our stance was dropped back down near stock height and the big drop pitman arm was no longer required. To resolve all of this, we could’ve just replaced the rod ends with new factory pieces and installed a stock pitman arm. But being over 20 year old technology, there are some better rod end designs available today that can not only last longer but be less expensive to replace. Carrick Customs of Bend OR is a small fabrication shop that specializes in some of this old body style Ford stuff and offers a complete heavy duty Dana 60 steering linkage system that can improve steering feel and longevity at the same time. Built from 1.5”x.188 DOM tubing, their tie-rod bar and draglink are stronger than OEM parts and will remove any flex in the system and better handle a big heavy set of tires or off-road abuse. Using state of the art Synergy Mfg. metal on metal heavy duty tie rods, the low misalignment boots help to eliminate the dead spot feeling in your steering wheel as you put in that initial input from the wheel. After breaking the tie rod ends loose from the steering knuckles and getting the draglink to break loose of the pitman arm, the entire steering linkage was removed as an assembly. Laying side with the Carrick Customs pieces, you can really see the difference in size and understand why this setup will last longer and offer a more positive feel in the wheel. The factory tie rod end compared to the new Synergy Mfg. ends used on the heavy duty linkage from Carrick Customs. The low misalignment dust boots used on these ends help the tie rod from rolling over too much, which really eliminates the ‘dead spot’ feeling in your steering wheel. The pitman arm end of the drag link is also upgraded from a factory piece with the use of a GM 1-ton high angle rod end, which is not only stronger than a factory Ford piece, it’s less expensive as well. So, on top of extending the life of the steering system, when and if anything, ever needs replaced, it’ll be cheaper to do so. The complete steering kit uses a new Y-Link adapter and double adjuster rod end tube adapters that make everything stronger and easy to adjust. One thing worth noting, the new rod ends are larger than stock so your steering knuckles on the axle will need to be drilled out to accept the included tapered sleeves. The pitman arm also needs to be modified to accept a taper sleeve as well, which will require machining the hole out larger and having the sleeve tig welded in to place. Since the new tie rod ends are larger than the factory units and require a different tapered joint at the knuckle. Carrick Customs includes a new tapered sleeve to insert into your factory knuckle, but in order to fit, the knuckle needs to be drilled out to a 7/8” hole size. This was easily accomplished with a good step bit. Results For those of you that are the do-it-yourself kind, this job wasn’t too overwhelming and was accomplished in the garage in a little over two hours. You will need some specialty tools like a pickle fork and a socket big enough for the pitman arm nut. Removing the steering shaft from original steering gear was the most troublesome part of the job and took a pry bar and some finesse to get it to break loose and slide off the splines. Just took some patience and time. With the new parts installed, you’ll have to get a professional alignment done before you can really drive it far or notice the improvements. The combination of new heavy duty Carrick Customs steering kit and Redhead Steering gear was completely worth the time and expense. A quick trip across town and down the freeway for a bit was all it took to prove it. The steering wheel no longer has that back and forth play in it and every bit of wander has been cleaned up. Our bump steer issues were resolved, and you get instant reaction and feedback from the truck when you make input at the wheel. The front-end feels every bit as responsive as a brand new truck does. Like the knuckles requiring a larger taper, the draglink side of the pitman arm will as well. After purchasing a brand new factory style pitman arm, we had a local machinist place it in his mill to bore it out to a 1” hole, so the supplied tapered sleeve could be inserted and tig welded into place. Our turning radius still leaves something to be desired, as it’s still a 22-ft long solid axle school bus, but it’s really improved the overall driver experience. With the front suspension and now the steering all dialed in, we’re just about done with our front end modifications, with the exception of some new hub bearings, Dynatrac ball joints and the EBC brake rotors and pads we have sitting here waiting to get installed. Next month, we’ll focus on exterior upgrades with the addition of some new wheel to wheel side steps, a bed cover and we even have a brand new set of Toyo tires to test out. To go along with the new linkage, in hopes of eliminating every bit of slop in our steering, we’ll also be upgrading the steering gear box (original with 230,000 miles) with a reman unit from Redhead Steering Gear. In order to do so, the factory box needs to be removed, starting with disconnecting power steering lines located on top. Next up is the removal of the steering shaft, this posed to be the toughest part of this whole job but with some penetrating oil and a pry bar it finally slid off the shaft with some persuasion. You’ll want to be sure the steering wheel is straight and in a locked position before doing so and be sure it doesn’t get rotated when not connected to the box. On these old Fords, there are just three bolts that insert through the outside of the driver frame rail and thread directly into tapped mounting locations on the gear box. Slowly removing these three bolts with an impact gun allowed the box to break free of the inside frame and drop to the floor. Since we weren’t reusing the pitman arm for a lifted truck, we didn’t spend the time to remove it from the gear box. Aside from the shiny black and red paint job on the new steering gear, you won’t see much physical difference in the worn out original and the new Redhead box. However, that doesn’t mean they’re the same inside. Redhead goes through every box and installed all new needle bearings and custom fits every worm and piston assembly with custom machined steel balls to eliminate all play within the gear box. Before installing the new gear box on our F350 truck, we installed the new pitman arm since it was a little easy access just sitting on the shop floor. Be sure you get the alignment correct and to torque that big 34mm nut to spec. Out with the old. In with the new. Tackling this job on your own in the garage or driveway wasn’t too much of a challenge, though it did require some specialty tools. With the help of air tools and being prepared with everything we’d need; it took about 2 1/2 hours start to finish. Don’t forget it’ll need a professional alignment when you’re all done. The new Carrick Customs linkage worked out perfectly, with no tolerance issues anywhere and plenty of room for adjustments in the rod ends to dial everything in perfectly. After everything got torqued to spec, we went through and installed all the cotter pins through the castle nuts and dropped it off at our local tire shop for an alignment.
