Repairing Our Project Truck’s Fuel Leak: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fixing a Leak on Our Project Truck

So, if you’ve ever had a lowered truck, the first rule is to pay attention to what you’re driving over so you don’t drag on things, right?

+Well, we pulled Stock to Not off the trailer at the Florida Truck Meet to go to the dyno, and I didn’t pay attention and ripped the sump off of our project truck and dumped an undisclosed amount of fuel in the parking lot before the event even started…

Fast forward a couple weeks as we were looking for a solution to replace our ripped fuel tank and keeping in mind fitting our (soon to be) triangulated 4-link setup, which wasn’t going to fit with the OEM tank anyways.

So here’s our solution! A 36-gallon, 19-inch-tall fuel cell to go in the bed. Our friend Nick with Nick’s 4×4 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, has this setup in a few of his rigs, and personally I love the look. Plus, it gives me more fuel capacity than a 20-gallon aux tank that I could get offline for the long drives to all the events we go to, so to him it went!

We first took out the stock tank, and got rid of all the OEM return lines to replace with 6AN lines from my existing Full Hook Performance return line setup. I’ve been having issues with these rubber lines rubbing on the outside of my frame, so everything was run through the frame rails this go around! A very factory-looking hole was made in the bed to plumb up all the feed and return lines to our FASS pump that will come up into the bed as well.

Next, we made a quick plasma cut bracket, dry fit the fuel system, and welded on the tank, along with the 8 and 6AN bungs for the feed and return lines.

Getting everything on after that was a breeze. We put our existing fuel filters back on in case some remaining junk was left in the tank after we washed it out prior to install, and we got this truck back up on the road for Rudy’s!

Special thanks to Nick for helping us get this truck back on the road ASAP! We will be doing our 4-link I mentioned earlier in this article with Stock to Not soon!
